It might be the last place you think you need it, but a calculator is one of the handiest tools you can have at the grocery store. From calculating unit cost to comparing apples to oranges (literally), a calculator really helps determine the best bang for your buck. Divide the total price by the number of ounces to compare different dry goods and brands of the same cereal. Easily add up the number of sheets of different paper towels or toilet paper (don’t forget the ply!). The list goes on and on. So slip a calculator inside your reusable shopping bag today, and never be without it at…

    29 Oct 2009 | 7:37 pm
Flexible Spending Accounts, also known as FSAs, are a very useful thing to have.  Through a plan at your workplace, you can put money away each pay period, tax free, towards medical (and dependent care) expenses.  Then when you have an expense, you can pay it out of that fund or get reimbursed for it. If you have an FSA, make sure you know what’s going on with it.  What dates is it valid for?  Most are Jan 1st to Dec 31st, but plans vary.  How much is left in it?  Do you have a plan for using it up?  These are use it or lose it plans, so if you let the money sit, you’ll…

Pretty much everything in our house was used when we got it – even our dog and cat.  But I haven’t ever taken the time to photograph and catalog most of the great deals we’ve gotten over the years.  So I’m quite impressed with the Thrifty Chicks for their latest project – an album of 201 photos of awesome thrifted stuff.  It’s like a Christmas catalog of unique stuff.  You can’t order from the pages, but you can be inspired to go out an find your own awesome stuff, for far less than you’d spend at the mall. For a couple years now, I’ve had Colin Beavan’s blog – No Impact Man – on my blogroll.  His site is both interesting and inspiring, and I’ve always enjoyed it.  I  just finished reading his new book (also titled No Impact Man), and highly recommend it.  The focus of the book is on Colin and his wife and daughter as they work to eliminate as much as possible of their carbon footprint for a year.  No transportation except their feet and bikes, no food that isn’t local, no electricity in their apartment, no elevators… it’s quite an impressive…

Every year, I make Christmas ornaments for our five nieces.  I love making them, and the girls tell me they love putting their own ornaments on the tree.  Some years I’m stumped for ideas, but last week I came up with an idea that I really like, and I’ve made three ornaments so far.  Here’s a picture of the first two: In my craft stash, I had kept a pile of old Christmas cards (this goes against my new clutter-free lifestyle, but my craft corner is exempt).  To make these ornaments, I cut squares and rectangles out of the cards, used a needle to punch…

I got an email from a reader today, asking what sort of things our toddler does with his time, particularly since we don’t have a TV.  I thought I’d share some of what we do, in case other readers are looking for ways to occupy a small child without TV or expensive toys. I’m very lucky in that my husband and both work from home.  When our son was born, I cut back to only about three or four hours of work for our business each day – the rest of my time is devoted to our son and our household.  My husband has his office set up in our basement, and we keep the stairs…

I’ve mentioned before that we use one credit card for pretty much all of our spending.  We get 1% cash back on the card, and it’s an easy way to keep track of our spending, since it’s all listed in one place on the statement.  Our billing cycle starts and ends around the 10th of each month.  This morning, I noticed that we’ve spent a total of $835 so far in this cycle, and we’re already 2/3 of the way through it.  And that includes plane tickets to go visit my husband’s parents in the spring ($280 for two tickets – our son will still be under two,…

Frugality can be fun and easy. Each respondent answers the same four questions. Today’s interview is with Me from Me in Millions. What does frugality mean to you? Frugality means using your resources wisely. It means not surrounding yourself with cheap crap, but buying quality things that will last. It means buying things you use and not just buying things because they’re inexpensive. To me…

One of the stocks I own–in rather low quantity–is Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN). It was one of the stocks I looked at when I decided to stop buying into Apple, Inc. (AAPL) because it met a few important criteria for me: I’m a customer myself, the company is profitable, and they are, in my opinion, the best in the world at their primary business (Internet retail). They also have a toe in other businesses where they may not be the best (the Kindle electronic book reader, the Amazon MP3 music store, and the Amazon Unbox online video rental store). Not too long ago, the stock had a…

The original price of this bicycle is $9199.99, so the minimum starting bid of $5,899.99 might seem like a bargain! Might. Yes, I would love to have a bike like this; my feeling is that my Cannondales and Bianchis wouldn’t compare on the road, but I could also buy dozens of those versus one Serotta. • Brand Loyalty Doesn’t Always Mean More Expensive

    16 Nov 2009 | 1:54 pm
We’ve looked at brand loyalty in the past; there are some times that brand loyalty costs money. There are items where I am very loyal to the brand–MP3 players and computers, Apple; motor vehicles, Toyota; shorts, Surf Line. In other areas it doesn’t matter as much (shoes, pants–although I am partial to Tactical–shirts, and other items). But I discovered this week that brand loyalty doesn’t always cost you money. Sometimes it may actually have you pay less. My example: earbuds. One of the dogs at home loves to eat earbuds and has ruined a couple in the $70…

The one thing it includes aside from the unlimited data and SMS is the Phone As Modem (PAM) tethering option, although it does not apply to its highest end phones. • Solar LED Christmas Lights

    16 Nov 2009 | 5:49 am
I've long been a fan of LED Christmas lights and their energy-savings, but now there's something that I like even better: solar LED Christmas Lights. They're every bit as efficient as regular LEDs, but they don't require miles of extension cords to run, and they don't use even a drop of electricity. Pretty cool. The only uncool part? They still cost about $20 a set. Hmm ... maybe I'll wait and stock up during the after-Christmas sales. What are your thoughts on this newest of new-fangled inventions? Well last week I asked you what one thing you would eliminate from your holiday schedule.  There was lots of great answers & discussion in the comments.  Now it’s time to flip that one on it’s ear and ask: “If you could add just one event or tradition into the holiday season-what would it be?” For me?  Hard to say. We already do a LOT of holiday traditions. . . Christmas is just one of my favorite times! We already have a fairly full schedule of traditions: advent calendars, advent wreath lighting, reading the advent story bit by bit each night, decorating the…

If you have kids in your house, I’m sure you’ve already heard of the “Madagascar” movie franchise.  Zoo animals~voiced by folks like Chris Rock, Ben Stiller, Jada Pinkett Smith and Andy Richter~are lost in the wilds of Madagascar. Madcap adventures ensue that are equally entertaining for children and adults. Well folks, there is a new Christmas movie out, “Merry Madagascar”!  I was sent a review copy of the show-unfortunately it arrived while I was away on my cruise/conference and so I only got to watch it this morning. It was an interesting experience,…

Not an exciting menu plan-but hey, sometimes that is just the way life goes.  At least with all the chaos I still attempt to have a plan Monday: Ok, I lied. No plan-arriving home from travel after dinner. Yankee Bill will take care of feeding the kiddos. Tuesday: Venison Steaks, Sauteed Onions, Gravy, Rice & Greenbeans I better use up a bit more of that Venison in the freezer before Yankee Bill heads out on Saturday to try to bag us another one!  Yes, it’s deer camp time again soon.  The gravy is totally cheating-the type in the little packages. The Wall Street Journal article: How to Escape the Rat Race provides a few tips and suggestions to prepare for a career change (assumes new career will pay less than old or at least take time to ramp up to old salary is starting own business), early retirement, or semi-retirement. The experts are quick to point out that health insurance is a huge stumbling block for most considering a rat race escape. • Making Sense New England

    19 Nov 2009 | 5:15 pm
I was flipping channels tonight and caught the show Making Sense New England on PBS. The half hour show had a segment featuring Amy Dacyczyn, the famous founder of the Tightwad Gazette and lifelong frugal zealot. The interview showed Amy's house in Leeds, Maine and took a tour of her sewing room. It was kind of amazing to realize that she started the newsletter in 1991 and by 1996 had retired from interviews and finished with the books. Those books are still selling and presumably she is still enjoying an income stream from those five years of work. If you are curious to see Amy's house and…

USAToday's article: More members of middle class file for bankruptcy features 40-year-old single Mom Staci Schubert who was earning $275,000, when 6 years ago she decided to start her own business. The article does not say, but I have to assume that her business was not providing much income, since the article implies it ate most of her savings. The great recession has sunk the business and she has run up $65,000 in credit card debt. She tried to find a full-time job without much luck, because the job market was saturated. Temporary freelance design work couldn't cover her bills. So in January…

Ever since eBooks started being sold I worried this day would come. But with readers costing over $200 I thought I was safe. But now Amazon has launched Kindle for PC and I am in trouble. You just download this bit of software onto your laptop (or computer) and tah-dah! Instant eBook reader. On the one hand this is great - no need to spend hundreds on a Kindle Wireless Reading Device. But now just about any book I could want to read is available to me at the click of a mouse and instantly available via download (and instantly charged to my credit card). The barrier of first needing to spend…

Very exciting! After I wrote about the possibility of libraries someday lending Kindles, I discovered that one here in Maine - in Camden - already does this! Hopefully, this will be yet another instance of "As Maine goes, so goes the nation!"I got a MOST unusual book order the other day, a person in Sofia, Bulgaria ordering The Frugal Family's Kitchen Book. I sent him an email asking how on earth he'd become aware of the book, and if I hear back I'll certainly share what he says with you. Speaking of The Frugal Family's Kitchen Book, it's time to order for Christmas gift-gifing. You can use…

    8 Oct 2009 | 1:08 pm
Plus, a recipe for shrimp-stuffed portobella capsThis fall I harvested our first soybean crop; I can't imagine WHY it's taken me so long to grow them! Although I could have cooked them in the pods in salted water to just eat out-of-hand, I shelled them instead. Then I simmered the beans - aka edamame - for about 20 minutes, dried them very lightly coated with some olive oil and roasted them at 350 for about 30 minutes. Sprinkled with sea salt and then tried to keep from eating them all at once! I will definitely grow much more next year as, like most bean, they grew easily and produced…

Books fall open, you fall in...David McCord Like so many of you, I am a voracious reader, and also like so many of you, I passionately support my local library. The past few years have seen some interesting changes, shifts in what - and how - America reads. Right now, with money still tight (no matter who proclaims this recession over), libraries are enjoying a resurgence of patonage. But, what will happen when the economy truly picks up? Will sales of "real" books rebound? Will the price of Kindles fall, and that kind of "book" capture more and more readers? No matter how libraries, books…
  • Vegans, Vegetarians, Flexitarians, and Freeatarians. Oh, my!

    23 Sep 2009 | 3:46 am
Although I like to think of myself as a vegetarian, I do still eat some seafood which I guess makes me a flexitarian. Flexitarians generally eat no flesh, but once in a while do eat seafood, poultry or red meat. There are a stunning number of labels these days for describing our eating habits and styles. Where for centuries of our country's history, we strove for "three squares," now we graze, nosh, aim for six minis a day, and eat many, many meals "on the go."When I first became interested in vegetarianism a very long time ago, the World Vegetarian Congress defined thirteen levels of…

Basic Bisquick-type mix, cookie, cake, bread mixes. Meat seasoning mixes, and so, so much more. One recipe in that book has always interested me, but I'd never tried it until last weekend. It's called Marie's Fruit Cocktail Mix, a combination of green grapes, peaches, melons and blueberries in a lemon- and orange-flavored simple syrup. I hadn't tried it because I couldn't imagine how this mix would freeze and not be all mushy when thawed.Of…

The Frugal Oenophile's Wine of the Week
  • Wine of the Week for November 9, 2009

    9 Nov 2009 | 9:40 am
French Tom Shiraz 2005 -$13.95 ($12.95 until Nov )Style: R2France Look for chocolate tones at the rim of the deep black cherry robe. The nose suggests something soft and gentle, with sweet grass, cocoa, violets, and cherry aromas. Not so intense on the palate, with ample blackberry and prune flavours, soft tannins and a tangy acidity. Medium body and length; it's a good mid-week wine that will pair nicely with BBQ, especially ribs. (LCBO 115675)
  • Wine of the Week for November 2, 2009

    2 Nov 2009 | 8:48 am
Cavallina Grillo-Pinot Grigio IGT 2008 - $9.95Style: W3Sicilia There are subtle aromas of talc, green gage and just a touch of peach here. Very smooth on the palate, with a firm, slightly tart acidity supporting green apple and plum flavours, and good body and length. A great little wine for the price, although some may find the tartness a bit trying. Try with roast chicken, gnocchi, or smoked salmon. (LCBO 123166) I recently posted Chapter 7 of my little wine novel. In this "episode", a winemaker comes to visit and to answer all questions.Read it at The Oenophile Next Door
  • Wine of the Week for October 19, 2009

Grey Fox Cabernet Sauvignon 2007Style R3California, USA Simple enjoyment here. There’s been a bit of a feeding frenzy on the magnum, but you should find lots of the 750s available. The nose presents aromas of plum, blackberry, black currant and traces of spice. A bit light, mildly flavoured and very even, with a firm acidity and soft tannins. Enjoy with simple dishes: burgers, pizza or chili. Magnum - $14.95 (LCBO 107201)750 ml - $7.95 (LCBO 527515)
  • Wine of the Week for October 16, 2009

    16 Oct 2009 | 7:41 am
Pillitteri Equifera Chardonnay 2007 - $14.95Style: W1Canada: Niagara Look for subtle aromas of oak, citrus, baked apple, and butter. Quite tasty, with the oak leading off, giving way to mainly apple flavour. Good body and length with a pleasantly tart finish. Try with chicken Kiev, carbonnara sauce or creamy cheese. (LCBO 134155) Malivoire "Red" 2008 - $14.95Style: R3Canada: Niagara The colour here is an inky black cherry. Lovely vegetal nose, plus oak, dark berries, vanilla and spice. Appears to be dominated by merlot, with plum and dark berry flavours, gentle tannins and a somewhat bitter…

Creekside Pinot Gris 2008 - $13.95Style: W3Canada: Niagara Bright medium straw colour. The nose shows tangy pear, lemon and grapefruit aromas. Quite tangy on the palate with loads of citrus/grapefruit, and hints of mineral and smoke on the close. Very good body and length, this is a scrumptious and elegant package that would please any palate. Serve with mushroom risotto, roast chicken or stir-fry. (LCBO 83196) Colio Girls' Night Out Merlot VQA 2006 - $12.95Style: R3Canada: Lake Erie N. Shore ON (LENS) This competent member of Colio's "packet of three" shows classic blackberry and dark plum…

Credit card companies can be sneaky sneakers. They have trickster ways that entice us to spend more, pay off less, and dig ourselves deeper into credit card debt. Years ago when I clued in and figured out how my credit card company was pocketing my pay check, not only did I beat $17,000 of debt but I stopped screwing up my financial future by learning to stick it to my credit cards. Sure, it’s not hard to get tricked by credit cards. With all the enticing minimum balance payments, high interest rates, and ease of use it’s pretty darn easy to fall prey to the power of plastic. I'm going to talk about the most controversial member of the annuity family, the variable annuity with life. This is a very strange investment vehicle in that it is a mix of life insurance and fund investment. Essentially you put money every month into the variable annuity, part of that payment goes into the insurance component of your account (essentially like a life insurance premium) and the other part goes into "sub accounts"…

Here are the basic characteristics of a variable annuity:1) Tax deferred - gains are only taxed when you withdraw them.2) Fund based - your money is going into some sort of mutual or bond fund that you select (generally an annuity offers 6-12 funds that you choose from). The variable part just means that your money is…

Posted By PaulI came across another major annuity type called the "fixed deferred" or "fixed interest deferred" annuity that I wanted to talk about.A fixed interest deferred annuity is kind of like a savings account, so I'm going to assume we all know what a savings account is and describe the annuity in contrast to that.1) Like a savings account a fixed annuity gives you a known return on your money. In fact with fixed annuities you generally "lock in" an interest rate for some amount of time (like 5 years) and then after that interval has expired you "lock in" a rate again. One example is…

With Christmas around the corner, it’s time to get my shopping on.  While some of the names on my list are fairly simple to buy for, I always try to find that *special* gift for the gals above – my best friends! My friends are so much more than friends to me – they are truly my family.  Considering I have grown up with them since pre-school, we are very close.  We also share family holidays together.  We always have, and now we include our own children in the festivities. I love my friends dearly, but they are the hardest ladies to buy for!  You know the type –…

What is Montessori School? A Montessori school provides an alternative to traditional education. Based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori and her visionary methods, Maria Montessori was an Italian physician who achieved fame because of her inventive teaching methods and her incredible insight into the mechanics behind the learning process of children. The hands on approach of Montessori schools allow the student to be an active participant in his or her education. Encompassing all grade levels, most Montessori schools offer programs beginning at age 3. The early childhood years are…

Did you ever stop and think that your unused unwanted items might be someone elses treasure? I'm, a volunteer for the St Vincent de Paul Society. Each year we sponser a Giving Tree program for those in need. Many are working poor and those who live below the poverty line. We do home visits to each family who signs up for the gift progam to obtain the information about the children sizes, ages, items they could use for Christmas etc. Hours before one such visit a woman walked into our office and offered us a twin bed, the bedding and a Christmas tree with lights and ornaments. She was moving…

    9 Nov 2009 | 6:36 am
My grandmother grew up during the Great Depression. There was never a lot of money growing up, and the family grew up hearing stories about how tight money was when they were little. Consequently, regifting was something she regularly did. My beloved grandmother lived to be almost 92, and over the years we got used to getting odd gifts from my Gram. Many were gifts that she had received and didn't think she needed. It wasn't unusual for me to receive a gift that my sister or Mom had given her the year before. Being brought up the right way, we would always look surprised on Christmas Day, and…
  • Merry Christmas, Mom

    5 Nov 2009 | 10:56 pm
When our son was six, he decided to get me a Christmas present. He came out of his room one day, all smiles, holding a wrapped box and put it under our tree. "That's for you, Mom," he said, proudly. On Christmas morning, he ran to the tree and grabbed my gift and brought it to me to open, which I did. Inside was a very pretty brand new purse. I said, "Thank you, sweetheart. I love it." As I continued to look at it, I said, "You know, this looks a lot like a purse I have in my closet but haven't used yet." "Yes, Mom. It is!" he said happily. "You…

  • President’s Environmental Youth Awards Recognize Green Student Leaders

    Jeff McIntire-Strasburg
    20 Nov 2009 | 10:40 am
How many of the environmental education initiatives that you know of were started by teachers, parents, or non-profit organizations? That’s typical: from artistic approaches to rainwater harvesting to solar boat building, most efforts at teaching kids about environmental issues start with adults. But students often come up with their own programs, too, and the President’s Environmental Youth Awards aims to highlight those efforts that start with schoolkids. Started in 1971 by the EPA, this awards program “…recognizes young people across America for projects which…
  • When it Comes to Food, Concern is Good - But Action is Better

    Steve Savage
    19 Nov 2009 | 6:06 pm
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has developed a career-long role that entails finding issues to worry about and writing about them.  That can be a good thing because science is definitely about asking the hard questions.  Sometimes however, these well-intentioned folks can let their biases and presuppositions get in the way. UCS has just released a report linking increased pesticide use to the adoption of biotech crops.  Their presuppositions are that both of these are bad things - GMOs and chemicals.  Their logic flaw is that even though they note that the biggest increase was in…

This is a followup post that will attempt to address some additional, wide-spread myths about the commercial sale of seed.  In this case the topic with be “GMO” seed improved through genetic engineering (an industry that is now 13 years old and which has been planted on well over 2 billion acres cumulatively, much of it in the developing world). As someone with substantial direct experience with this industry over the years, I’d like to try to speak to some distorted perspectives on this technology. Steve Savage
    17 Nov 2009 | 12:18 pm
There is a lot of confusion and disinformation circulating today about seeds and the ethics of their commercial sale.  Actually a healthy, commercial seed industry is critical for agricultural sustainability.  Because seeds are such a fundamental component of the sustainability of our food supply, this area deserves careful thought and accurate information even if you are never going to farm or even garden. I’ll try to address some of the modern “myths” about this.  I’ll talk about “farmer-saved seed,” and “hybrid seed.” In a later post…

Copenhagen is a water town, and the iconic symbol of Denmark’s capital city is the Little Mermaid silently standing watch over the harbor. Next month the Little Mermaid welcomes the global community coming to negotiate at least the foundation of an international treaty at the COP15 climate conference to carry beyond the Kyoto Protocol expiring in 2012. The Little Mermaid takes her role as a symbol of climate change seriously. And she’s angry. Angry because also coming to her town are thousands of lobbyists and business (as usual) representatives intent on holding back progress for…

  • How to Add Humidity to Your Dry Home

    Tiffany
    19 Nov 2009 | 9:03 am
Do you feel that yet? The dry winter weather that gives you chapped lips and uber dry skin? In the winter, the air gets very dry and cold, and forced-air heat can make the air inside our homes uncomfortably dry. That kind of desert-like air can be hard on our bodies, drying skin and mucus membranes, making us more susceptible to colds and other respiratory ailments. Super-dry air can also damage the structure of your home, causing cracks in drywall and gaps in floor joints (dryness causes wood to shrink). And the static electricity is just plain annoying. Increasing the humidity in your home…

When I think about what I want my kids to get out of all the time they spend playing I realize that beyond learning and creating I also want something more for them… enchantment, magic, adventure. To this day one of the most magical play moments I recall as a child was when I was about 8 years old. I was on an overnight trip, staying in my grandparents motor home. We were at a horse show where my grandfather and my Aunt were competing in the barrel races. While I was interested in watching them compete I was not so interested in watching the other 100 or so contestants so I had to find…

    12 Nov 2009 | 9:57 am
One of the first steps in moving towards any greener, more sustainable lifestyle has to be the step where you ditch chemical cleaners and start using cleaner, greener options. It is my number #1 recommended step in fact because everyone has to clean house and by using green cleaners we make our homes and our planet safer. Its not always an easy switch though. We may get used to using harsh cleaners like Clorox or Windex and using something more mild like baking soda and vinegar seems like more work. I know when my husband quit his old job that took him out of town all but a few days a month…

He has got to be one of the most awesome MDs out there AND he is on mainstream TV sharing his important knowledge. He is one of the reasons I started drinking green smoothies… he and Kris Carr that is. I saw them on Oprah making green juices and since I had cancer, just like Kris, it really hit home with me. At the time I was on medication that made my throat swell if I drank anything colder than lukewarm but as soon that was out of my system I started drinking those green…

How did that work out for you? It’s not like there’s a market out there for Corvettes or anything like that. Or even a family who could have bought a used Volvo. Anyway, the program is done for now and the numbers are in. And they are not good. C4C is functionally worse than the Broken Window parable. At least the kid broke the window on accident. The Clunker’s program encouraged people to purposely throw bricks through their windows, in a figurative way. Cash for Clunkers was one of the more economically poor decisions in a long time• By facilitating the purposeful destruction of the…

Why bother reading any of it? Just talk about it.Millions of Americans won't read "Going Rogue" and will think it's pretty good because they like SP. And millions more, like the Washington writer, are just as certain that it's conservative pop garbage, same as her. And they know this without cracking the thing open…

I’ve received several emails asking for my Chicken Spaghetti recipe that I made during my Baking Days a couple of weeks ago. It’s pretty easy, and it’s one of my favorite things to eat! Ingredients: 1 – 2 large onions 1 large bell pepper 1 whole raw chicken (seasoned with salt and peper) 2 packages of spaghetti noodles (we use whole wheat, but it works with either) 2 cans of Ro*tel (yeah, you don’t see the Ro*tel in the picture above because I completely forgot about it!!) 2 cans of whole black olives 2 can of mushrooms (or you can cut up raw mushroom &…

Their everyday prices are higher than what I would expect for canvases (compared to other stores that sell canvases), BUT you just can’t beat the $14.95 price for an 8×10 canvas. • How I Paid My Rent For 6 Months By Thrifting

    16 Nov 2009 | 10:17 pm
Let me first start by saying that having to make rent this way was in no way fun or recommendedUnless you’re retired or insanely dedicated to it. Paying my rent for 6 months via scraping by on reselling thrifted goods was a ton of work. I was able to utilize my in-depth knowledge of web selling platforms to more easily liquidate most of the items. I was able to achieve this feat mainly by selling just a few items each month that made up most of my then $800 a month rent. On a soapbox-rant side note: let me say that when congress or some rogue old senator (who you know doesn’t…

RML- Being More Through Having Less
    17 Nov 2009 | 11:19 am
If (currently under discussion) we end up in the Austrian Alps for Christmas and skiing,  I am going to need a BIG pile of books and maybe a few movies to take with me. I will be (happily) on babysitting duty most of the time and warming cold fingers and toes in between ski lessons... I probably won´t have any internet connection in my bedroom (!), so it is unthinkable to go away without a LOT of reading material (remember my hospital visit? and this was last summer holiday)!  Here are some things that have caught my fancy to begin with - however haven´t placed the order just…

It’s Sunday…time to edit, add, and appreciate one thing in your life that will help you be a better you. Edit one thing–material objects, negative thoughts, bad habits, or activities that don’t reflect who you are as a person. It doesn’t have to be a physical thing; Sometimes bad habits and negative thoughts are more detrimental than physical clutter. Add something-Bring in something or reinvent one thing in your life–thoughts, habits, activities, clothing, objects…Add something that will help you be a better person; And yes, sometimes a new pair of jeans can help! Appreciate…

Just nothing would do today- wrong sizes, wrong colours, wrong material, wrong drape, boring, boring, boring (but that´s Munich for you). Maybe I´m becoming more discerning? I hope so. Nothing that would make me feel like Liv Tyler anyway and nothing perfect for a girl´s night out on Saturday.  Reminder to self: There are probably far more interesting items in my own wardrobe than the shops at present! I love comments and would love to visit your blog in return. Please leave a message with your…

This was/is my lunch and dinner (to go with salad). I love Sashimi! This is my 16th Wednesday Weigh-in post (but not continously), I am still at it! Another kilo down I am happy to report. I managed to get back on track after starting to fall into a bad routine late last week. I had got into the habit of wandering into the kitchen - and fridge- repeatedly and getting little nibbles - esp bits of cheese. I made myself stop last night through the amazing power of WILLPOWER though I also know the nights have to be calmer for me - quieter and better organised. Means I need to get the kids into…

In an effort to encourage my new healthy lifestyle I bought myself (and the family) some snazzy new salad bowls today from kitchenware maker Guzzini´s Vintage range. They are unbreakable (ish) (always a plus at our house), colourful (though I didn´t go for blue as I was trying to stick to actual food colours) and BIG - big enough to hold huge healthy individual salads without stuff going everywhere! I am so pleased with these - I´ve wanted some salad dinner bowls for some time. My somewhat RAW and healthy dinner will nowdays be a changing base of: - whatever salad greens I have that day-…

  • 12 Free After Rebate Plus Profit Deals

    19 Nov 2009 | 2:19 pm
Many manufacturers offer rebates for the full purchase price of products. The companies make their money by hopefully gaining you as a customer or by you forgetting to mail in the rebate forms! But you can make money as well as get free products by using a coupon when you make the initial purchase because you’ll get the original purchase price refunded.  A lot of refund offers are “guarantees” where you need to include why you dislike the product. You can still like the actual product, but maybe you don’t like the packaging or the price is too high to buy regularly.

This should probably wait until the last day of the gift guide because stocking stuffers are really an after thought, but I couldn’t wait. I love small gifts that I know the recipient will enjoy. Chocolate bars from Trader Joe’s are quite tasty and start at just $1.79 for a sizeable portion. TJ’s sells different strengths of dark chocolate if you go for that sort of thing. Ikea has chocolate bars for just $.99 in the post-checkout food section, though I’ve not tasted them. Who doesn’t love Suduko? Only people who haven’t tried the wordless crossword…

I know, ties are so cliched. But these ties from The Tie Bar are 100 percent silk! And only $15! The sample tie I received easily rivaled the ties sold at department stores. It had a nice holiday pattern with bold red and green accented with thin gold stripes. Standard shipping is $6 per order, no limit. Buy it! First it was the bacon salt. Then bacon-flavored mayonnaise, and now bacon lip balm! When will the bacon flavoring stop? I was, however, more excited about these items than my tester, who refused to smear his lips with bacon balm. His love for bacon only goes so far. But don’t…

Next time your cooker, fridge, lawnmower or washing machine breaks, don’t buy a new one. Buy a spare part, and fit it yourself. We did this a while back, when our fan-assisted oven became a fan-unassisted oven. We couldn’t get the oven hot enough for cooking; this is what happens, when you buy a house with a kitchen straight out of a DIY shop bargain bin. We thought we’d have to pay someone to come and replace the fan element, or buy a new cooker and have someone come and fit that. Both options were disgustingly expensive. Here in our cushioned First World, we are accustomed…

The winner is after the jump… Thanks too for all the great tips, which are going to prove very useful in the months to come. Here are some of my favourites: Cut the bottom off a 2 litre pop bottle and use it as a mini-cloche (Kelly). Save your old, laddered tights, cut them into strips and use them to tie up tomatoes, beans etc onto poles. They stretch much better than string and don’t cut into the stems as they grow (Claire). If, like me, you like growing your own vegetables but you are no Bunny Guinness, this little book is something of a godsend. Why? Well, it is jam-packed with handy hints, which is good. But what makes this book great is that it spells out all the bits and bobs that you should be doing in the garden, on a week-by-week basis. It’s a bossy book! For this reason I am grateful to the publisher who sent it to me, and hopeful that On The Plot With ‘Dirty Nails’ could be the missing link between my vegetable garden that exists in my head, and my vegetable garden that exists in real…

  • Giveaway & Review: Jolt Jeans!

    19 Nov 2009 | 6:00 am
Looking for a pair of cute and comfortable jeans? I was recently given the opportunity to review a pair of Jolt's Tab Back Flare Jeans - and I am in love! These jeans are super soft and feel as if they've already been broken in. They sit low on the waist/hips and are the perfect length that I can wear them with flats! These jeans are a great medium wash color and are also pretty structured (as in they aren't super stretchy), something else I love! These jeans also fit great! No gaps and they aren't too baggy or too tight - I love that! More than anything, these jeans are quality denim - and…

I’m gearing up for a busy week next week. I’ll be baking and getting ready for Thanksgiving and visiting family. I’m hoping to do a few thankful crafts with the girls and emphasize family and gratitude with them. I love Thanksgiving – a holiday all about enjoying yummy food with my family and taking time to reflect on how blessed we are. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t get much better than that If you have a minute, check out some links I’ve enjoyed over the past couple weeks: A friend of mine sent this link to me. Nicki
    19 Nov 2009 | 5:16 am
Next week is the big, yummy food day. I’ve made my menu plan for that day and I’ll work on side dishes for a few days even before the actual day. With all the work that goes into Thanksgiving it would be a shame to have any of that glorious food go to waste. Here are some tips and ideas for you to choose from. Pick which ones you like and plan ahead so you don’t feel overwhelmed in the aftermath of your giant meal. There’s no reason that many of these things can’t be done a day or two after Thanksgiving, so just have a bunch of storage containers handy and…

    17 Nov 2009 | 2:48 am
As we lead up to Christmas I’m going to be posting some gifts that I’m creating. Many of them were included in my 50+ Homemade Christmas Gift Ideas. This is one of them. This idea comes from Blissfully Domestic. I was trying to think of some fun stocking stuffers for Chloe and this idea seemed perfect. My little girl is very artsy so I’m hoping she’ll love them! It took very little time and cost me nothing (OK, I used paper muffin liners – so it cost me those). I gathered all the broken crayon pieces from the bottom of the crayon box (which is an old baby wipes…

    16 Nov 2009 | 2:40 am
I’m a big stuffing fan – big fan. The thing is – the older I get, the less I like the “only add butter and water” kind. What’s in that stuff anyway? So I found a recipe a while back to make it myself. I tweaked it and played with it for a couple years now and it’s evolved into something completely different. Depending on what you add in to it, it can be very frugal. I make this using stale bread that I keep in the freezer. Each time I have a slice or two of stale bread or a heel that no one will eat, I break it up and toss it in a bread bag that I…

Kelly over at Almost Frugal asked me to participate in her series This Is What Frugal Looks Like. She asked me four questions: What does frugality mean to you? What is something that you do that is ‘typically’ frugally? What is something frugal that you do that is unusual? What are some of your long term goals that being frugal will help you to accomplish? If you’re interested in my answers, head over there to check it out Why I do what I do ~ Chloe was in time out for throwing a rock at my younger niece yesterday. • Is Your Brand Just a Technical Service or is it Emotionally Compelling?

    Franklin McMahon
    19 Nov 2009 | 7:11 am
There is a big difference between a brand and a service, a brand is more of a story and a service is more of a task. So when you do networking with potential clients, how do you describe yourself? Do you stick to talking about the task? I have always disliked the term “freelance”, I always prefer that people position themselves as a company, even if it is just them. But freelancers, especially when they are just starting out, often stick to just describing the tasks they do. For example if they do web work, they will mention they can do all the coding, host the site on a server…

We’re all busy, we all have lots of tasks, projects, things going on. We are focused on growing our career. This could mean networking, gaining new clients, making things happen. But what about you personally? What about your skill set? Your talents? Self-improvement and self-growth? Author Stephen Covey covered this in his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, in fact it’s the 7th Habit, sharpening the saw. You are the saw and you are always engaged in keeping things improving, growing and sharper. This could cover many areas including your mind, spirit and physical body.

    Franklin McMahon
    4 Nov 2009 | 6:05 am
Are you ready to try an experiment? It can be fun and it can show how effectively you may be running your own business. The truth is too often we pour enormous amounts of energy into items with little to no payoff. Take a look at your to-do list and then examine your next week, next month and someday to-do list. Chances are you may have hundreds of items. You’ll sort and analyze them at some point, but how you do that can be the difference between stagnation and success. If you look at successsful people who run their own successful company, and then review their to-do list, you’ll see…

Food is one of those few real essentials in life, because we will quite literally die without it. Yet, for all of that, it’s rather neglected and looked down upon at times! I am blessed to live in a country where it’s been a long while since we have had real famine and starvation. In fact, since the origins of our country we have been characterized by having plenty.

Distinguishing between positions and interests is a valuable skill at the negotiation table. If you seek to create value in the relationship, you must be able identify the approach your opponet is using in the negotiation. Choosing to focus on positions or interests will have a direct influence on the outcome. Before entering into any negotiation situation you must ask yourself why you want what you want and choose the best approach to get you there. Positional Bargaining A position is the stance you take on a specific subject. Positional Bargaining focuses on “the what” in a negotiation.

We all know that smartphones are smart, but how cheap can they get? Precentral reports you can get an amazingly cheap deal on the Pixi at places like Walmart, Amazon, and Wirefly. The catch? You have to buy a service contract. "While the $25 deal at Wirefly is nice, they don't draw anywhere near as many customers as Walmart does, where the Palm Pixi is going for $29.95. The one retailer that has any hope of customer levels coming near that of Walmart? Amazon, and they're undercutting Wally World by $5 and selling the Pixi for $24.99 on a new contract..."

Luxury retailer Saks and discounter Target said they remain cautious about demand after reporting profits that beat Wall Street analysts' estimates..."
